Mise-en-scene: Stranger Things analysis

 


Denotation

Setting ; Back to the Future (1985) - The film is seen playing with seeking answers, they uncover a series of extraordinary mysteries involving secret government experiments, unsettling supernatural forces, and a very unusual young girl.

Lighting High contrast lighting, or low key lighting, is perhaps the most noteworthy technique the production team on Stranger Things used to impart a supernatural filmic look.




Connotation

Lighting ; Most of the “natural” scenes in Stranger Things are shot with flat lighting. What is flat lighting? We define flat lighting as “a style of even lighting that produces very little depth and contrast.” Flat lighting isn't typically a good thing. Stranger Things' enormous success can be attributed to many factors, as it is a production that has been critically acclaimed, among many things, for its plot, direction, performances, and outstanding atmosphere, set in the 80s, right down to the smallest detail.
