Audience Effects Theory

 1) Write a definition of a passive audience:

An audience that is exposed to media/marketing material but doesn't actively engage with the content or messaging.
2) Write a definition of an active audience:
An active audience engages, interprets and responds to a media text in different ways and is capable of challenging the ideas encoded in it. A passive audience is more likely to accept the messages encoded in a media text without challenge and are therefore more likely to be directly affected by the messages.
3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory:
The audience are always passive and therefore take the intend message from the producer as if it was injected into their minds
4) Write down a media product (e.g. TV show, newspaper or video game) for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification. The first one is done for you:
INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE: The Times newspaper
> Why: It tells audiences important information about politics, the world and more.
PERSONAL IDENTITY:
> Why: A strong self-identity is essential when it comes to intimacy, asserting yourself and exercising good boundaries with your family, friends, and partner.
DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT:
> Why: This is important as it catches the audience's attention.
RELATIONSHIPS:
> Why: Relationships are important as it bring a person happiness and living a full live of positivity.
5) Re-watch the clip from Blue Planet above and write a paragraph analysing how elements of the clip offer the audience pleasures or gratifications (use media terminology from Uses and Gratifications theory and the 3 Vs - notes outlined above).
The clip from the Blue planet Victorious and Voyeuristic pleasure as it has a lot of hidden cameras and you are experiencing this through the diver’s point of view. This is bother information and diversion as it teaches about the ocean as well as entertaining you with the creatures.
